The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) President, Biodun Ogunyemi has announced that the 10 months strike has been called off.
During a world press conference in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Wednesday, the ASUU President said the Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari and all parties involved must work assiduously to keep to their part of numerous agreements reached before they agreed to call off the lingering strike.
The new development follows the meeting held on Friday 20th November 2020, where the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) and the Federal Government reached a consensus.
ASUU confirmed this in a statement on their Twitter via its official Twitter handle, saying: “Academic Staff Union of Universities – and Nigeria [Federal Government] has finally agreed on major issues that will lead to termination of its 10-month-old strike.”
The statement continued: “The agreement was reached on the early hours on Wednesday morning after an eight-hour close door meeting of negotiations between both parties.
“Professor Ogunyemi thanked students and their parents for their understanding throughout the nine-month period and said: “no amount of sacrifice would be too much to get the matter resolved as long as the government is consistent with its commitments.”
“ASUU expresses joy on how the Federal Government handled the negotiation process and that they will be having their own executive meeting to conclude and gets back to the Government within 24hrs.
The Union also warned that should the government fail in meeting its part of the agreement reached with the university lecturers, ASUU would return to strike without notice.
